The average adult human body contains about 250 grams of salt – about three salt shakers full – but is constantly losing this salt through activity, so it needs to be replaced.

The body needs salt to function – both sodium and chloride are an essential part of our bodily fluids, which is why our blood, sweat and tears taste of salt.

Consumers concerned about their sodium intake should check food labels for the amount of sodium per 100 grams. A low salt product is less than 120 milligrams of sodium per 100 grams of food. Check with your doctor for further advice.

The recommendation for a healthy diet is to eat plenty of fresh food, including lots of fresh vegetables. Salt is best used sparingly.
